E-commerce may touch Rs 5,500 cr in 2007-08
Business Line, New Delhi, June 20, 2007: With shopping on the Internet gaining popularity in metros, e-commerce volume in the country is likely to touch Rs 5,500 crore in 2007-08 from Rs 2,200 crore in 2006-07, according to industry chamber Assocham.

Changing lifestyles and shopping habits turning for convenience and large number of people and merchants becoming Internet savvy will be primary reasons for pushing up e-commerce transactions.

Products that will gain popularity in e-sale could include gems and jewellery, online books sale, accessories, apparel, gift products, music and movies, hotel room besides tickets for transportation, according to the chamber.

Most of e-shoppers have shown satisfaction with their purchasers, according to the chamber findings.

About half of the regular e-shoppers in the country are in the age group of 26-35, while 28 per cent of them are in the 18-25 age group. About a tenth of them are in the 45-60 age group.

Eighty eight per cent of online shoppers are male, according to chamber findings.
